The Panel Van Story

The decision to get a second van came about as a result of the deteriorating condition of the CF. The CF's body is looking worse for wear as the years go on and it has been long overdue for some attention.

The only thing is there's always another show, "after the next show I'll start fixing it up", and then the next show, and the one after that. So while attending the Gunns Bush Lazy 9 Run in 1999, Brian Rustbatch's old panel van showed up in town and was for sale.

I got to talking to the guy and he said he had been trying to sell it for a while, so I told him if he still had it in 6 months I might been keen to buy it.

I returned to Christchurch and started to raise the money to buy the van. After about 4 or 5 months I had most of the money and decided to ring him in a couple of weeks when I had all the money. Two weeks later I rang him and he unfortunately had decided not to sell it. Very disappointed I decided since I had the money raised to look in the Buy Sell and Exchange for a van. After 2 or 3 months of looking over the same old crap, a van that sounded OK came up.

"Holden Panel Van, 308, TH400, lowered, big feet, quite a good looker" the ad read. So I took my panel beater out and had a look at it. He said if I don't buy it he would.

I picked it up a couple of days before Christmas 1999. The tyres were all pretty bald and needed replacing so were the first things replaced. The rubbers around the tailgate were missing so it was a bit fumy to drive; these replaced time to address the leaky fibreglass panels somebody put in place of the side windows. These were causing the sides to rust, so I took them out and removed the rust and put windows in instead.

By now the Rangiora Muscle Car Show was rolling around so I began building an interior. I got it half done for the show. After the show worked hard on the interior to get it ready for 2000 Nats in Timaru. A few days before the Nats I had the windscreen removed and resealed so it wouldn't leak. However on the way to the Nats a stone from another car broke the screen - bummer.

Well that's the panel van story so far, I guess I should start rebuilding the CF now, maybe after the 2002 Nats…
